HOME – INSTALLATION
Installing F-Droid on an Amazon Fire TV Stick requires three simple steps. First enable apps from unknown sources in your Fire TV Stick settings. Second install the Downloader app from the Amazon App Store. Third use the Downloader app to download and install the official F-Droid APK directly onto your Fire TV Stick. The entire process takes approximately 10 minutes and works on every Amazon Fire TV Stick model available.
Yes — you can absolutely install F-Droid on any Amazon Fire TV Stick. While Amazon’s Fire TV operating system is based on a heavily modified version of Android it still supports sideloading APK files from outside the Amazon App Store. This means you can install the official F-Droid APK on your Fire TV Stick and get access to hundreds of free and open source Android apps that are not available on the Amazon App Store.
There is no need to root your device or make any long-term changes to the operating system of your Fire TV Stick in order to install F-Droid on it. It is also entirely free. Regardless of their level of technological expertise, any Fire TV Stick user can finish this easy operation in less than ten minutes.
The Amazon App Store has a very limited selection of apps compared to Google Play — and many of the best free and open source Android apps available on F-Droid are simply not available on the Amazon App Store at all. By installing F-Droid on your Fire TV Stick you gain access to hundreds of additional free and open source apps that Amazon does not offer — including privacy tools, media players, browsers, and much more.
F-Droid is also completely free of ads and trackers — unlike many apps available on the Amazon App Store which are filled with advertising and data collection. Every app on F-Droid is open source meaning you can be confident that what you install on your Fire TV Stick is exactly what it claims to be with no hidden features or malicious code.
F-Droid can be installed on every Amazon Fire TV Stick model that supports sideloading. This includes Fire TV Stick 1st Generation, Fire TV Stick 2nd Generation, Fire TV Stick 3rd Generation, Fire TV Stick 4K, Fire TV Stick 4K Max, Fire TV Stick Lite, Fire TV Cube 1st Generation, Fire TV Cube 2nd Generation, Fire TV Cube 3rd Generation, and all newer Fire TV Stick models released after these. All of these models support the same installation process described in this guide.
Make sure you have the following items ready before starting the F-Droid installation process on your Fire TV Stick. An Amazon Fire TV Stick must be plugged into your TV and turned on. Your Fire TV Stick must be linked to a functional internet connection. To browse the settings and installation process, you’ll need the Fire TV Stick control. Additionally, it takes about ten minutes of uninterrupted time to accomplish the installation process.
The first step is to allow your Fire TV Stick to install apps from sources other than the Amazon App Store. This setting is disabled by default on all Fire TV Stick devices for security reasons but it is completely safe to enable for the purpose of installing F-Droid.
Choose the gear symbol in the upper right corner of the Fire TV home screen to access the Settings menu using your Fire TV Stick remote. From the settings menu, scroll right and choose My Fire TV. Choose Developer Options from the My Fire TV interface. If Developer Options are not visible, you might need to enable it first. To do this, return to My Fire TV, choose About, then quickly push the center button on your remote seven times until a notice stating that your device is now in developer mode appears.
Once you are in the Developer Options menu find the Apps from Unknown Sources option and select it to toggle it on. A warning dialog will appear — select Turn On to confirm. You may also want to enable ADB Debugging on this same screen if you plan to use ADB in the future.
The Downloader app is a free app available on the Amazon App Store that allows you to download files directly to your Fire TV Stick from any URL. You will use this app to download the official F-Droid APK file onto your Fire TV Stick.
Press the home button on your Fire TV Stick remote to return to the Fire TV home screen. Use the search function at the top of the screen to search for Downloader. Select the Downloader app from the search results — it is the one with an orange arrow icon developed by AFTVnews. Select Get or Download to install the Downloader app for free. Wait for the installation to complete and then open the Downloader app.
You will see a straightforward UI with a URL entry field in the middle of the screen after the Downloader program has opened. To access the on-screen keyboard, use your Fire TV Stick remote to choose the URL entry field. Make sure you enter the official F-Droid download URL, f-droid.org/F-Droid.apk, precisely as typed, without any spaces or mistakes. To start downloading the official F-Droid APK file to your Fire TV Stick, input the URL accurately and click the Go button.
The download progress will be displayed on screen showing you the file size and current download speed. The F-Droid APK file is approximately 12 MB in size so the download should complete in under one minute on a typical home internet connection.
Once the download is complete the Downloader app will automatically prompt you to install the downloaded F-Droid APK file. Select Install on the installation prompt screen to begin the F-Droid installation on your Fire TV Stick. The installation process is fully automatic and typically completes in under 30 seconds on most Fire TV Stick models. Once the installation is complete you will see a confirmation screen — select Open to launch F-Droid immediately or select Done to return to the Downloader app.
After successfully installing F-Droid the Downloader app will ask if you want to delete the downloaded APK file. We recommend selecting Delete to remove the APK file from your Fire TV Stick storage as it is no longer needed. Deleting the APK file frees up approximately 12 MB of storage space on your Fire TV Stick.
F-Droid will instantly start syncing its repository and downloading the full list of all accessible apps to your Fire TV Stick when you launch it for the first time. Depending on the speed of your internet connection, this initial sync could take two to five minutes. Don’t browse or install any programs until the sync has finished. After the sync is finished, you may use the Fire TV Stick control to explore the entire F-Droid app collection.
After the initial sync F-Droid may prompt you to grant it permission to install apps on your Fire TV Stick. Navigate to your Fire TV Stick settings, go to Applications, select Manage Installed Applications, find F-Droid in the list, and enable the Install Unknown Apps permission for F-Droid specifically. This allows F-Droid to install and update apps on your Fire TV Stick without requiring manual approval for each installation.
Now that F-Droid is installed on your Fire TV Stick here are the best apps to install first for the best possible Fire TV experience.
Kodi is one of the most powerful media center apps available on F-Droid and is perfect for Fire TV Stick users who want a complete home media center experience with local media playback, streaming from network shares, and a massive library of addons.
VLC for Android is the most popular and feature rich open source media player available on F-Droid supporting virtually every video and audio format — an excellent alternative to the default Fire TV video player for playing local media files.
NewPipe is the best YouTube alternative available on F-Droid giving you an ad free YouTube experience without any Google account required — an excellent alternative to the official YouTube app for users who want to watch YouTube without advertising.
Fennec F-Droid is the most popular browser on F-Droid and works well on Fire TV Stick for basic web browsing using your remote or a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse combination.
If the Downloader app is not available in your region’s Amazon App Store connect a USB drive to your Fire TV Stick using a USB OTG adapter, copy the official F-Droid APK file to the USB drive from your computer, then use a file manager app to install the APK from the USB drive directly on your Fire TV Stick.
If the F-Droid APK download keeps failing check that your Fire TV Stick has a working internet connection and that you have entered the download URL correctly. Try using the full URL https://f-droid.org/F-Droid.apk if the shorter URL is not working for you.
If F-Droid fails to install after downloading make sure that Apps from Unknown Sources is properly enabled in your Fire TV Stick Developer Options settings. Go back to Settings, My Fire TV, Developer Options and confirm that the Apps from Unknown Sources toggle is switched on.
If apps are downloading in F-Droid but failing to install make sure you have enabled the Install Unknown Apps permission specifically for the F-Droid app in your Fire TV Stick application settings as described in Step 7 of this guide.
